Warsash Scarecrow competition winners!

Warsash Scarecrow competition winners!Solent Financial Services’ City Gent won the trophy in the Warsash Festival scarecrow contest.

Steve and Teresa Hunka, directors at the company in Shore Road, were presented with a trophy by Councillor Mary Nadloski who represents Warsash ward.

“I’m very pleased, proud and honoured to have won,” said Steve. “He got so much attention sitting outside my office and it was good to get involved in the whole spirit of the occasion.

“It was nice for all the businesses to do to put some fun back into what we do and show the thriving business in this community.

“It definitely generated interest in the business too because people would see the scarecrow and pop their head in – even though that wasn’t the main reason for it.”

Steve’s already got ideas for his scarecrow for the next festival in 2013 and hopes to make a stockbroker on a surf board.

Ten businesses entered scarecrows which were displayed in the village for the public to enjoy in the lead up to the Warsash Festival.

Around 5,000 people visited the festival at Strawberry Field where festival-goers were invited to vote for their favourite.

Simon Wrigglesworth, of the Festival Planning Committee, said: “The standard of the scarecrows was excellent. People really had a hard job deciding which to vote for.

“They brought an atmosphere of fun to the village in the build up to the festival and people enjoyed having them around.

“The Warsash Festival is a celebration of the community, people, businesses and organisations. So many people contributed to its success. It really is a village event.”

Warsash Councillor Mary Nadolski, who donated the trophy for the last Warsash Festival, awarded the cup to this year’s winners.

Cllr Nadolski said: “We ran a similar competition in 2008. The people worked ever so hard on their scarecrows and I wanted something to recognise their effort.

“The entries this year were fantastic. They were all over the village and I loved them all. I was very pleased to present the trophy to Solent Financial Services for their superb entry.”
